Indianapolis,
IN - After months of consideration, President George W. Bush tonight
announced that he will not allow federal funding for the killing
of any human embryos for the purpose of stem cell research. The
President acknowledged that human life is "a sacred gift from
our Creator" and openly expressed his concern over scientific
research that approves of the destruction of human life.
Bush also announced
that he would allow federal funding for research on 60 stem cell
lines from human embryos already destroyed. "There is nothing
the President can do to restore the lives of those embryos already
killed," notes Executive Director Mike Fichter. "However,
we must never forget that each of these embryos was a unique human
life that was deliberately destroyed in the name of science. Because
of this fact, there will be a distinct taint on this research."
Fichter is hopeful
the President's appointed council to monitor stem cell research
will turn its attention to the promising stem cell research opportunities
available from human placenta and adult donors.
