Congressman Mike Pence was born in Columbus,
Indiana. He graduated from Hanover College in 1981 and earned his
Doctorate in Jurisprudence Degree from Indiana University, School
of Law in 1986.
Pence was elected in November 2000 to represent
the interests of Indiana's 2nd Congressional District on Capitol
Hill.
As the only freshman Member of Congress to
chair a subcommittee this year - and only the fifth freshman in
the past 50 years to hold such a position - Pence leads the House
Small Business Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform and Oversight.
In this position, Mike has begun to identify for elimination the
most burdensome regulations that stifle small businesses.
Pence is the sole Hoosier Republican on the
House Agriculture Committee. With the 107th Congress facing the
challenging job of reauthorizing the 1996 Freedom to Farm Act, the
Congressmans presence on the Agriculture Committee gives East
Central Indiana farmers the opportunity to have their voices heard.
Congressman Pence also serves on the House
Science Committee, where he sits on the Subcommittee on Space and
Aeronautics. As a member of this subcommittee, Mike attended the
launch of the Shuttle Atlantis. During the trip, he discussed the
future of the space program with NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin.
Earlier this year, House Majority Whip Tom
DeLay named Pence an Assistant Majority Whip for the House leadership
team. In this role, Pence encourages his colleagues in the GOP to
hold the line on fiscal responsibility and to support the Republican
agenda.
In the months since his election, Congressman
Pence has become a national spokesman on compassionate conservative
issues. He debated Chinese Ambassador Yang Jiechi over human rights
on CNN's Inside Politics. Pence has also appeared on CNN's Burden
of Proof and Fox News Channel debating stem cell research. The Rush
Limbaugh Show brought Pence's proposal for "sunshine and liberty"
in campaign finance reform to a national audience.
Mike Pence ran for Congress in 1988 and 1990.
Following his first experiences in politics, he became an outspoken
advocate of civility in public life, authoring the acclaimed essay,
"Confessions of a Negative Campaigner" in 1991.
In 1992, Pence started a career in radio broadcasting
and, two years later, Network Indiana syndicated his show statewide.
The Mike Pence Show aired weekdays on 18 radio stations from 9:00
a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pence also hosted a public affairs television
show in Indianapolis from 1995 to 1999 on UPN-23.
Since his election to Congress, Pence has
continued his involvement in radio, appearing regularly on Network
Indiana's Garrison Show, WIBC, WHBU, WMDH, WPZZ, and WHON from his
in-office radio studio on Capitol Hill.
Mike and his wife Karen have three children
and reside in Columbus, Indiana. When Congress is in session, the
Pence family lives in Arlington, Virginia. Congressman Pence describes
himself as a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that
order.
