Press Release
November 6, 2001
>From executive director Mike Fichter
Indianapolis, IN Indiana Right to Life today applauds Attorney
General John Ashcrofts decision to reverse a 1998 ruling by
Clinton Administration Attorney General Janet Reno that authorized
the use of federally controlled drugs to assist suicides in Oregon.
Ashcrofts decision effectively reinstates
the original determination by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Administrator
Thomas Constantine, who announced in November 1997 that assisted
suicide is not a legitimate medical purpose and that
prescribing a controlled substance with the intent of assisting
a suicide violates the Controlled Substance Act.
Expert medical commentary on this issue from
an Indiana ethicist is available through Indiana Right to Life.
Please call Jeff Drozda at 317-697-5975 for arrangements.
The ruling does not impact Indiana as Indiana
law already prohibits assisted suicide.
