Abortion's Impact on Indiana's

African-American Community

According to the most recent statistics from the Indiana Department of Health (2005), a full 29% of abortions in Indiana (2,958) were done on African-American women, in spite of the fact that African-American women comprise only 4% of the population in Indiana.

According to the Indiana Department of Health (2005), the ratio of abortions to live births is shockingly high among African-American women.  The ratios by age group are as follows (comparison figures in parenthesis represent the corresponding ratio in the white community):  African-American women ages 15-17, 267 abortions per 1,000 live births (162); African-American women ages 18-19, 253 abortions per 1,000 live births (140); African-American women ages 20-24, 290 abortions per 1,000 live births (108); African-American women ages 25-29, 310 abortions per 1,000 births (64); African-American women ages 30-34, 319 abortions per 1,000 births (55).

The highest abortion rates among African-American women in Indiana are found in the 20 to 24 year-old age group (34.8 % of total abortions on African-American women in Indiana) and the 25 to 29 year-old age group (24.9 % of abortions on African-American women in Indiana.

The largest number of abortions on African-American women occur in Marion County (1,978 abortions or 32 percent of abortions in that county), Lake County (795 abortions or 38.6 percent of abortions in that county), and Allen County (131 abortions or 20.9 percent of abortions in that county).

Nationally, minority women comprise 13% of the U.S. female population between the ages of 15 to 44, yet 36% of abortions are done on this demographic.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, over 13 million African-American children have been aborted since 1973.

Infant mortality rates in the Indiana’s African-American community (14.2%) are more than twice the infant mortality rate in the white community (6.5%)
